Teaching Matters: Improving Teaching By Assessing Learning
Description: In this four-hour practicum we start by exploring the term “learning outcomes”, and going over the basics of backwards design; the topics addressed at this workshop can serve as the foundation for lesson and curriculum planning. We then move on to the basics of rubric design. After a short lunch break, we will continue with a workshop that will cover some of the most common, and not-so-common, ways of assessing an instructor’s teaching - very important when putting together a teaching portfolio. Here, we will also cover how to interpret UCM’s end-of-semester (student) evaluations. We will finish with a workshop dedicated to composing a teaching statement - one of the most important components of a teaching portfolio, and one which is almost always required as part of a complete academic job application.
You may attend one or more workshops. An attendee that has participated in all four workshops within the same semester will receive a certificate.

Note: audience cross-over for this practicum is permitted, i.e., faculty and graduate students/TAs may attend either date/workshop(s) listed. Faculty track will be presented by CETL staff members. Graduate Student/TA track is often presented by CETL instructional interns.
